Fishes - Australian Museum Fish Site

Collections - Fish Data

This site allows access to the Australian Museum Ichthyology database.

The database will be of primary interest to scientists working in the field. However, non-scientists are more than welcome to check it out.

The database can be queried by genus, species and subspecies. The results are displayed in a table that lists family name, taxon (genus, species, subspecies), locality (country, state or ocean), habitat, year of collection, specimen form, capture depth range (in m), size range (in mm) and specimen fixation in formalin or alcohol (F/A).

Note that nearly all larval fish records are retrievable but not all ‘adult’ records. Records that contain sensitive data or are only partially identified (ie, not identified to species) are not displayed. Please contact the Collection Manager for information on our holdings of ‘partially identified’ adult material.

Considerable work has gone into producing this database. Understandably however, there will be errors. Use the information with discretion and if you would like further details, or have found errors, contact Collection Manager.
